Then and Now — 1931 & 2021505 16th Ave NE.

From 1931: “Eight-room, two-story hollow tile Colonial home. Four bedrooms, two tile baths, two toilets. Sun porch, dining room, kitchen, ample linen and clothes closets, steam radiator, two car garage. Faces south on fine corner lot in the North Shore section of fine homes. Much more shrubbery has been planted since this picture was taken. We honestly recommend this as the most outstanding bargain in the North Shore section at the reduced price of only $9,000. Sold by Van Sciver & Son Realty.”

One of the long-time residents of this home was Roy and Page Dee.

Joseph Roy Dee was born in Akron Iowa on March 18, 1900, the 10th of 11 children. Roy attended local schools in Iowa and then completed a four-year degree at the University. After graduation from college Roy started working in the oil industry as a salesman. On August 29, 1929, Roy married Ms. Page Dunlap and the two started spending their winters in St. Pete where Roy took a position as an oil salesman and sold real estate. Roy and Page had one son, Roy Jr. In 1935 Roy and Page purchased this featured house and spent the next 31 winters in St. Pete. Roy served as Mayor of Mt. Carmel Illinois from 1955 – 1959 and again from 1963 until his death in 1966. Roy went into the oil speculation business in the 1930’s and purchased a number of oil wells in Indiana, Illinois and Ohio. Roy died on April 10, 1966, at age 66 and is buried at Royal Palm South Cemetery in St. Pete. Page lived on until March 7, 1969, when she passed away at age 64, she is buried next to Roy.
