In 1924: “This large rambling home features 4 bedrooms, two of which have private baths. There is a four room and bath garage apartment at the rear of the 80 X 127 lot”

This house was purchased in 1914 by Robert and Mary West from Fannie Hawkins who had it built in 1913 with her husband, Millard (Millard died in 1914, which prompted the sale).

Robert Lee West was born on December 28, 1862, in Richmond Va. Robert and received his schooling in Richmond. Upon graduating High School, he took a job with the Bell Telephone company and worked his way up to a manager position. Robert married Ms. Mary B. Hayes on December 23, 1884, the couple had two children; Hattie Lee (1887) and Frances Louise (1894) – Frances Louise West would later become longtime Dean of Women at St. Pete Junior College.

Robert left the telephone company in 1912 and took a position with the J.B. McCrary Construction Co., general contractors, with headquarters in Atlanta. Robert and his family moved to St. Pete in 1913 where he was a representative of the McCrary firm who was contracted to build the first municipal gas plant. Seeing that there was going to be a wealth of growth in St. Pete, Robert and Mary purchased the Hawkins Estate (this featured home) in 1914 after Millard Hawkins’ death.

Robert was so successful with the construction business that in 1919 he and Mary sold this house to Louis and Katherine Bopp and moved to a new home at 2001 Beach Dr.

In 1924 Robert organized the St. Petersburg Construction Co. and began to engage in local public and private construction.

Robert was a member of the Trinity M.E. Church and of St. Pete Masonic Lodge No. 139.

Robert died on May 18, 1934, at age 72, and is buried at Royal Palm South Cemetery in St. Pete. Mary died on May 4, 1956, age 72 and is buried next to Robert.
